Karavan Sarai offers a deeply immersive live music experience, blending the mysticism and musical traditions of the Silk Road—from the Middle East to India—with lush electronic soundscapes, global rhythms, and ecstatic trance elements. Ancient instruments such as oud and saz are layered with cinematic textures, sacred percussion, and ambient atmospheres to create a genre-defying sound.
Founded by international artist Narayan Sijan, Karavan Sarai is joined by vocalist and visionary Amber Renee in select formats. Together they invite audiences into a living ritual of rhythm, mysticism, and imagination. This is deep fusion—music that awakens the soul and moves the body.
All five Karavan Sarai albums have reached the Top 10 on the North American World Music Charts, with Torn in Lovenamed one of the Top 25 World Music Albums of 2020.

The debut album, WOVEN LANDSCAPES (2015), reached number 6 on the World Music Charts (CMJ), while the follow-up, ‘Painted Sands’ (2018), peaked at number 4 with over ten weeks on the charts. (CMJ). TORN IN LOVE (2020) peaked at number 6 with over 12 weeks in the Top Ten World Music Charts (NACC) and was selected as #22 of the Best World Music Albums of 2020. THE MOONS WITHIN REACH (2022) a more ambient sounding album also was on the top ten World Music Charts and Chill Out Charts (NACC). This evocative visual and sonic journey carries listeners to a nighttime courtyard of a virtual Silk Road palace, the Karavan Sarai that gave the project its name.
Composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist Narayan Sijan—of a rich, multi-ethnic heritage spanning the Eastern Balkans, Moorish Spain, Jewish Poland, and Ireland—spent over a decade living along the Silk Road from 1994 to 2006. Immersed in the lives of mystics, master musicians, and local communities, he absorbed their melodies, rhythms, and stories. From this journey, he weaves original compositions with traditional sounds, creating immersive musical storytelling that carries listeners across deserts, ancient cities, and star-lit caravan paths.
Karavan Sarai’s electronic music is co-created by two-time GRAMMY nominee producer and programmer Carmen Rizzo, whose credits range from A.R. Rahman, Seal to co-founding the world/electronic act Niyaz.
What is a Karavan Sarai?
Along the Silk Road, I was always drawn to the old karavan sarais—travellers’ inns or cultural hubs—stretching from India to Egypt, Turkey, and Morocco. These are real places, existing for thousands of years, where weary travelers—mystics, nomads, gypsies, kings and queens, camel traders, musicians, dancers, merchants, and even madmen—gathered around the fire in the inner chambers of a Sarai.
“Karavan” is the Persian spelling of caravan, and a “Sarai” is the palace or inn where diverse cultures, religions, and beliefs converged. Around the fire, tales of the world were told, food and medicine shared, and ways of life exchanged. Peace was the unspoken law within these walls; differences and conflicts were left at the door. Here, a singer from Egypt, a drummer from India, an oud player from Turkey, a dancer from Persia, a flutist from Mali, and a violinist from Serbia could come together and co-create new art. Often without a shared language or prior knowledge of each other’s music, they would jam, invent, and weave melodies together. In this space, the healing spirit of sound brought people together in love—a force so powerful it inspired me to create the music project Karavan Sarai.
After nights around the fire filled with inspiration, joy, healing, and creativity, each soul would carry that spark of potential into their own journey the next morning, moving in different directions. This is the essence of a Karavan Sarai—a living, breathing exchange of culture, music, and spirit. Over 20+ years since 1993, I have lived and visited these sites, and yes, Karavan Sarais still exist today, in remodeled shops, hotels, ruins, or restored historical sites.
This vision became the foundation of the band Karavan Sarai: to create music that honors ancient ethnic traditions, songs, and global rhythms of the Middle East and Silk Road regions, fused with lush modern electronics, beats, and original compositions. To craft spaces where the old and new generations can find a common thread of musical enjoyment—a sonic oasis, like the Silk Road casbah tents, alive with rhythm, color, and connection. At every show, in every venue, in every heart, we invite listeners to take a mystical journey, co-create the moment, and ripple that energy out into the world—like a spring of water, fresh and ever-flowing.
I am forever humbled by the meditative, healing, and celebrative power of music. My deepest desire is to gather listeners around that same fire, to feel the web of connection, and to experience the magic of a Karavan Sarai for themselves.
